Karmelo Anthony Found Guilty
The jury rejected his self-defense claim and sentenced him to 35 years.
In April 2025, Karmelo Anthony followed the Metcalf brothers, Hunter and Austin, under a tent set up for the brothers’ high school at a local track meet. When Austin Metcalf confronted Karmelo about being in the wrong area, Karmelo stabbed him. Austin bled out and died in his twin brother’s arms.
Today, a jury found Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder. He was given 35 years behind bars. That means the jury rejected the defense’s request for “sudden passion” as a mitigating factor.
Because the Judge ruled early on that there would be no cameras in the courtroom and only nine “certified” media outlets would be allowed to send representatives, it’s been hard to find information. However, Mary Anne Martinez from the Daily Mail was one of the nine, and her reporting has been great.
From what I’ve been able to gather, the case against Karmelo was solid. So solid, that his public defender lawyer was forced to try to convince the jury that Austin Metcalf stabbed himself on Karmelo’s knife so hard, that the knife pierced through the bone of his sternum and into his heart, leaving a 2-inch gaping hole. Several witnesses said that Karmelo instigated the encounter and refused to leave despite being asked to multiple times by multiple people.
Many of Karmelo’s defenders online are upset because the jury was primarily white, with no black people, even though at least three got through to the end of the Jury selection process. However, the Judge allowed the prosecution to strike them, despite a Batson challenge from the Defense, because they were teachers, and nothing to do with their race. There is a possibility that this will be raised in an appeal of the verdict.
