Governor Ron DeSantis chose Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to serve as the state’s next senator during an Orlando press conference this morning. This comes days before Rubio is set to resign to become President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of State.
“This is a time for action, and a time for Washington D.C. to deliver results to the American people,” DeSantis stated early this morning.
The Florida governor emphasized border security as a major issue that needed attention, saying Florida would be working with Trump to make sure immigration laws are enforced more strictly in contrast to the Biden administration. DeSantis outlined his criteria for the Senate appointment, saying he wanted someone who will commit to cutting spending, understand that federal bureaucracy has "run amok" and understand "the fight against illegal immigration,” as they work to make the nation much safer.
DeSantis had picked Ashley Moody for this role, noting her "impressive resume" as a commercial litigator and federal prosecutor, reminding the public that she became Florida's youngest circuit court judge in 2007. Moody was then elected to serve as the state’s attorney general in 2018 where she succeeded former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump’s nominee to head the Justice Department, and has since continued to tackle the Biden administration in court on illegal immigration, Covid-19 policies, transgender rights and student loan forgiveness.
According to DeSantis, Moody has “never let us down once” on immigration issues, one of the biggest issues that Americans today are worried about. Moody is a DeSantis and Trump loyalist, making her a reliable pick for the party as they push to strengthen our borders.
DeSantis’s Chief of Staff and top official lawyer for the Governor, James Uthmeier, will replace Moody as Florida’s AG.
I hope she does good for the people in FL.
